US Department of Education reported 1.5 million homeschooled students in the United States in 2007. This represented a nearly 40% increase from the estimated 1.1 million students who were homeschooled in the spring of 2003. In survey, parents cited "concern about the school environment" as the number one reason for homeschooling (88%) followed by "desire to provide religious or moral instruction" (83%) then "dissatisfaction with academic instruction at other schools" (73%).
